Can Punter Mod is a free-to-play game utility developed for the first-person shooter (FPS) game Half-Life 2 (HL2). In this oddly challenging and satisfying custom content, you do as the title says: punt the can all around the stage. Featuring the franchise’s signature crowbar weapon, you can strike a tin can as much as you’d like–flying and flipping around the apartment and beyond.

A casual HL2 mod

At its core, Can Punter Mod is a casual game built within the HL2 engine. As mentioned, there’s nothing else to do but to punt a can. It’s like a simplified game of golf where, instead of using a golf ball, you use your crowbar to direct the can. There are some pretty unrealistic physics involved, but you can make the can bounce off walls to get to the end.

Although it starts in an apartment, there are other stages you can play. Provided you can send the can in the right direction, you can go outdoors and even near water. You will have to navigate through holes and varying terrain as you punt your can. Unfortunately, there are only a limited number of levels available in the game. However, there are other maps to come in the game.

The mod features dry humor, some of which are only revealed after meeting certain conditions. For example, trying to interact with the can using the E button would reveal an in-game message “Why Would You Want to Pick It Up.” There are other secrets and references that would require you to play the game a few more times, with each discovery making the game more fun.

Although the premise sounds plain, Can Punter Mod is actually fun for a number of reasons. First, its simple concept is surprisingly enjoyable. Sending a can flying with your crowbar, plus increasingly challenging stages, can really make for an addictive casual game.
